Palliative Care Unit Volunteer

Description:  An on Hospital  Cottage has a purpose built 10 bed inpatient Palliative Care Unit in Caloundra. They require volunteers at the Unit to help create a welcoming and homely environment for patients, families and visitors. If you are successful you will be engaged in carrying out a number of tasks including such things as tidying common areas, reading to clients, playing games, watering and looking after flowers, having a laugh and chatting to residents.

  • Ensuring common areas are tidy and comfortable. Activities available. Appropriate books and magazines available.
  • Keeping flowers tidy and watered and placing them in available clean vases.
  • Ensuring patient rooms have items such as tissues, appropriate CDs.
  • Supporting patients and visitors if appropriate – a laugh, a chat, a distraction.
  • Helping patients and family to find things on the unit and making cups of tea etc.
  • Attending  to the coffee machine.

Other tasks:

As negotiated with the Coordinator, volunteers are rostered to attend at various times. Other specific activities/roles include bringing in a special morning tea, taking round the drinks trolley, helping to keep the garden colourful and healthy, looking after electronic equipment (CD and DVD players etc.) and much more.

Requirements:Patience, independence, initiative, a calm demeanor, the ability to accept instruction and willingness to pitch are important assets for this position. Being comfortable with the dying process is a necessity. A Blue Card is required but can be organised for you.
Location: Caloundra
Commitment: Regular – more than 6 months
Time Required: Usually about 2 hours per shift. One to two shifts a week desirable. Any day Monday to Sunday and Public Holidays
Training: Infection control, fraud, code of ethics, confidentiality etc. Task specific on job training.
Reimbursement: Tea and coffee provided
Transport: You will have your own transport preferably but there is a bus route nearby for those local to Caloundra

Gardener

Description: An organisation seeks a volunteer at their patient accommodation facility in Nambour. The house is a 20 bedroom accommodation facility that accommodates patients and their families and carers who are accessing the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services. Your volunteering position will be as a gardener helping to keep the facility in good condition.

You will be required to carry out general, light duties including:

  • Weeding.
  • Planting.
  • Pruning.
  • Watering.
  • Keeping the general maintenance and appearance of the grounds and gardens.

Requirements: You will be required to hold a Blue Card and undertake a National Police check. These will be organised for you.

Availability: 5 hours per week (approx). Whatever amount volunteer would like to contribute

General Maintenance Volunteer

Description: This organisation is seeking volunteers at their patient accommodation facility in Nambour.  This organisation is the provider of a house with a 20 bedroom accommodation facility that accommodates patients and their families and carers who are accessing the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services. A handyperson is needed to help keep the facility in good condition.

The position will include general and light maintenance duties such as:

  • Fixing and repairing furniture.
  • Replacing light globes.
  • Repairing hand rails in bedrooms.
  • Minor electrical repairs (if qualified.)
  • Fixing shelving etc.
  • Repairs to screen doors and flyscreens.
  • High pressure cleaning of outside area and playground.
  • Unblocking of drains.

Requirements: While no qualifications are required specifically for the general duties, if you are undertaking any electrical, plumbing or structural works you will need specific qualifications and tickets to conduct your work. You will also be required to either have or acquire a Blue Card and a National Police Check. However, these can be arranged by the organisation.

Reimbursement: Tea/coffee/morning tea

Transport: Own transport required.

Availability: 5 hours a week. Hours and days negotiable.

Arts Space Assistant Curator

Description: As arts space assistant curator you would help assist artists who are holding exhibitions in the planning of their exhibitions, promotion, setup and take down of their work.

Requirements: Ideally the volunteer will have good computer and communication skills and have a good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheets – some training may be possible in these areas. An arts background or interest in art and cultural heritage would be helpful to be able to curate exhibitions in the arts space. Having skills in photography, Adobe Illustrator, Creative Suite and Photoshop or similar software would be of great benefit in this position but are not essential.

Commitment: Regular – less than 6 months
Time Required: Fridays 10 am to 3 pm with the possibility of more hours
Training: Some training will be available
Transport: Public transport is limited to Eumundi so having a vehicle would be preferred

Hospitality Volunteers

Description: An historical house in Yandina requires volunteers to greet and serve light refreshments to the many visitors who come to the house. If you are mature, have a sense of humour, great people skills and prepared to do whatever is required, you’re the person this organisation is looking for.

Volunteers will be working in an air conditioned environment. We prefer mature volunteers, who can be relied on to open the house and prepare for the day to serve tea/coffee and light refreshments to visitors. They will be telling Yandina stories and cleaning up afterwards. People skills are essential because of the regular contact with visitors and the local community.
You will also be required to do minimal paperwork, head count and recording. 

Commitment:

  • Regular – more than 6 months
  • 9 am – 3 pm (Yandina Historic House is open from 9.30 am to 2.20 pm) Monday to Sunday (7 days per week, excluding public holidays).
  • Days negotiable.

Training: Training and induction will be provided.

Handyman

Description: A volunteer is needed with carpentry and minor building repair skills for an organisation in Shelly Beach. The person needs to be pleasant, punctual and reliable.

Requirements: Working with Children Blue Card and National Police Certificate.

Commitment: Regular – more than 6 months

Time Required: Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 3.00 pm

Grounds Maintenance

Description: a volunteer is needed at an organisation in Shelly Beach who enjoys working in an outdoor environment helping out the groundsman. Tasks include using a push mower, ride on mower, whipper sniper, hedger etc.

Requirements: A working with Children Blue Card and National Police Certificate are required. (Available Online). Assistance to obtain can be given if required.
