St John Ambulance First Aid in Schools Volunteers

BY: Joeseph / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Community Announcements

What is the St John Ambulance First Aid in Schools Program?

St John Ambulance Queensland is preparing to pilot a First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program to primary schools in the Sunshine Coast region in 2018, commencing in Term 3.

The FAiS Program is a new, innovative program designed to involve Primary School aged children in becoming skilled and confident in recognising the need for First Aid; whilst practising safety, accessing Emergency Services where necessary and applying basic First Aid skills. The program has been designed to be age appropriate, with focus on content, learning styles and suitability for particular ages of children whilst developing an interactive and fun educational experience.

Sessions will be presented to students at three (3) different age/class levels:

  • Prep to Year 2
  • Years 3-4
  • Years 5-6

St John Ambulance will be developing and managing the program via a dedicated Program Coordinator, who is based on the Sunshine Coast.

An estimated 10,000 students could be reached in 2018.

Donations, grants, and sponsorships are currently being sourced to supplement internal funding for all program coordination and all materials.

The education will be a free service to each student as part of St John Ambulance’s charitable community service program.

Volunteer Presenters/Educators are needed

Volunteer presenters/educators are required to help us deliver these 45-minute first aid education sessions to all primary school students at participating public and private schools.

Hopefully, a wide group of volunteers can be enlisted to provide the majority of the education sessions. The more volunteers, the greater the impact that can be made and the lower the workload on each presenter will be.

This program would appeal to volunteers of all ages and from various backgrounds – but mostly suited to those with some level of first aid, and a passion for educating young children on first aid, health and emergency management.

What St John Ambulance will provide:
  • An accredited Provide First Aid course (value $170) free of charge – if not already held
  • Pre-delivery training on how to deliver the 3 different primary school modules
  • Mentoring in the initial sessions to ensure quality of delivery, and competent and confident delivery by the educator
  • All materials and educational aides used to deliver the sessions
  • Support the obtaining of a Working with Children Check (Blue Card) – if not already held
  • Provide the volunteer with a St John branded polo shirt (Value $20)
  • Pay a daily expenses allowance of $25 to offset the cost of meals and transport incurred (for a full day only)
  • An opportunity to contribute to building a broad community health, safety and emergency management skill base for generations to come.
What the Volunteer has to provide:
  • An ability to competently and confidently explain basic first aid principles (DRSABCD) to primary school students
  • Functional English speaking and interpersonal skills
  • Physical ability to stand for up to 1 hour in presentations and carry out some light manual handling of equipment
  • A commitment to making themselves available for the Program onboarding process (training etc)
  • A commitment to deliver at least 5 days of sessions to school classes in the period August – December 2018 (this equates to 15-20 sessions of 45 minutes delivery plus set up and wrap up time = 1 hour minimum per session)
  • Their own transport to and from the schools
  • A commitment to join St John Ambulance as a volunteer member and comply with all St John Ambulance terms and conditions of volunteering.
Interested volunteers may make further enquiries to Beck Lee, FAiS Program Coordinator on beck.lee@stjohnqld.com.au
